Diabetic retinopathy is accountable for three per cent of blindness in India.
Two days ago Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah emphasised the need to promote awareness on diabetic retinopathy because it accounts for three per cent of blindness in India.
He stated that even though progress from lack of symptoms to blindness due to diabetic retinopathy can take several decades, early detection and effective treatment can enable the reduction of the cause of blindness as a result of diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetes has soared in India, with there presently being around 35 million diabetics in India, the biggest number in any country. This figure is anticipated to increase to 80 million by 2030.
He praised existing efforts to conduct eye screening camps for cataract and diabetic retinopathy as well as the creation of diabetes awareness, diabetic foot care and diabetes diagnosis camps.
